I was alive in those times too. The WU folks weren't just antiwar, they were fighting for the other side. Rich kids playing revolutionary. Revolutionaries is what they thought they were. Ayers wanted to kill someone when he bombed the Pentagon. Thats what he meant when he said a few yrs back he wished they'd done more. He didn't succeed in killing any soldiers or even civilian employees of the "war machine."

Three of the WU killed themselves by accident making a big bomb which exploded on them in a townhouse - in NYC if I remember right. The townhouse was destroyed and they were shredded to pieces as the bomb was filled with nails. The "revolutionaries" intended the bomb for Ft Dix - wanted to kill some soldiers.

Ayers and Dohrn apparently were shocked by the deaths of their friends and stopped doing dangerous things like making bombs after that. Thats all that happened - they just realized what they were doing was personally dangerous and chickened out on making any more bombs. No repentence, just a loss of nerve. Finally they used their rich family connections, money, and lawyers to buy them freedom from their crimes.
