ANWR isn't the only area where we could get oil and gas that's put off limits to drilling, its just the most well known.

If we want to avoid gasoline prices, $6 or $7 a gallon and then much more, we need to get off of oil as our primary transportation fuel ASAP.

If we do get off oil as our primary transportation fuel, any of the replacements will likely cost more than $6 or $7 a gallon for the equivilent amount of energy, except electricity of electric cars, which will require advances in battery (or fuel cell, or other storage mechanism) technology, plus investment in battery production and electricity distribution.

If you want to get off gasoline and diesel as our primary transportation fuels you probably need prices in excess of $6/gallon for a sustained time. We won't avoid higher gas prices through alternatives, we will only get the alternatives with higher gas prices.
