but one cannot reasonably compare what happened in 1980 with what's happening now, 20 or 30 years later; the entire terrorism environment is different today.

Yeah there was a lot more terrorism then than now.

"and there really wasn't any way for Reagan to have known that we would be facing the kinds of threats we do today (e.g., AQ) or that Hamas/Hezbollah would develop as they have, etc. "

They certainly knew about truck bombs and the threat of them in Beirut. Yet, they took a position that was virtually impossible to defend because the airport has the best visibility...

In other words, it was all PR.

"Of course, had Reagan chosen the other route, the entire Left, INCLUDING YOU, would have bashed him all the way along."

Of course. It was stupid to go in with small forces. It would have been stupid to stay. That is what Israel did. What did it buy them? Years of bloodshed and the humiliation of having to withdraw while having rocks and bottles tossed at them.

And that strengthened Hamas and Hezbollah in that area.

The solution to Lebanon, as it turned out, was to let them get tired of killing each other.

It was clearly a mistake not to have stayed and fought it out, and Reagan obviously realized it later on --

When did he realize it later on?
