When I post a chart, I always have the volume indicator on and I set it below the price chart.

I use a 60 period moving average to determine average volume. So, if looking at a daily chart, the volume bar (called histogram) shows the total number of shares that exchanged hands that day. If looking at a weekly chart, it shows the total number of shares that exchanged hands that week. The chart then shows how the volume compared to the 60 day moving average or 60 week moving average.
