NEW YORK (MarketWatch) -- Ross Stores Inc. (ROST) said Thursday that its May sales at stores open at least one year rose 7%. Analysts, on average, had expected same-store sales to rise 4.4%, according to Thomson Reuters. Sales for the four weeks ended May 31 rose 14% to $513 million.

BOSTON (MarketWatch) -- Nordstrom Inc. (JWN) said Thursday that its May sales at stores open at least one year rose 10.9%. Analysts, on average, had expected same-store sales to rise 8.1%, according to Thomson Reuters. Total sales for the four-week period ended May 31 were $716 million, an increase of 12.2%. Nordstrom said May sales were favorably impacted by an earlier start date for its annual Half-Yearly Sale for Women and Kids.

NEW YORK (MarketWatch) -- Kohl's Corp. (KSS) on Thursday said May same-store sales fell 7.2%, ahead of the forecast for a loss of 8% in a survey of analysts by Thomson Reuters. Total May sales rose 1.2% to $1.2 billion.

NEW YORK (MarketWatch) -- Chico's FAS, Inc. (CHS) said Thursday its May sales at stores open at least one year fell 16.9%. Analysts, on average, had expected the same-store sales to fall 14.7%, according to Thomson Reuters. Total sales for the four weeks ended June 2 fell 8.8% to $141 million.

NEW YORK (MarketWatch) -- J.C. Penney Inc. (JCP) said Thursday that its May sales at stores open at least one year fell 4.4%. Analysts, on average, had expected same-store sales to fall 5.8%, according to Thomson Reuters. Total sales for the month declined 2.4% to $1.34 billion. The retailer said it expects a mid-single-digit decrease in same-store sales for the five-week period ending July 5.

NEW YORK (MarketWatch) -- Saks Inc. (SKS) said Thursday its May sales at stores open at least one year fell 8.7%. Analysts, on average, had expected the same-store sales to fall 7.5%, according to Thomson Reuters. Owned sales for the four weeks ended June 2 also fell 8.7% to $227 million.

NEW YORK (MarketWatch) -- The Gap Inc. (GPS) said May same-store sales fell 14%, worse than the forecast for a loss of 9.5% in a survey of analysts by Thomson Reuters. Total May sales fell 8% to $1.09 billion. We were pleased that merchandise margins in May were significantly above last year," said Sabrina Simmons, chief financial officer of Gap Inc. "However, Old Navy continues to be our biggest challenge. As we have stated, we are working to rebalance Old Navy's mix of fashion and seasonal basic items, and expect to see improvements in the assortments by late fall."

WASHINGTON (MarketWatch) -- Costco Wholesale Corp. (COST) said U.S. comparable-store sales rose 7% in the four weeks ended June 1, with comp-store sales including international increasing 9%. Overall, the Issaquah, Wash.-based warehouse-club operator generated sales of $5.77 billion for May, up 12% from last year. Higher gasoline prices contributed in a big way to growth in U.S. comp-store sales. Excluding gas, U.S. comp-store sales would have been 5% higher for the month, Costco said.

NEW YORK (MarketWatch) -- Limited Brands Inc. (LTD) said Thursday that its May sales at stores open at least one year fell 6%. Analysts, on average, had expected same-store sales to fall 5.5%, according to Thomson Reuters. Net sales for the four weeks ended May 31 were $661.3 million compared to $774.7 million in the year-earlier period.

LONDON (MarketWatch) -- The Buckle (BKE) said Thursday that its May net sales at stores open at least one year rose 34.7%. Net sales for the four- week fiscal month ended May 31 rose 44.1% to $50.8 million.
