To deal with this controversy effectively, Mr. Obama needs to give another speech. This time he has to admit to sins of using race for political expediency – by knowingly buying into divisive, mean messages being delivered from the pulpit. He has to say that, as a biracial young man with no community roots, attaching himself to Rev. Wright and the Trinity congregation was a shortcut to move up the ladder in the Chicago political scene.

That was a good essay by Williams, but I disagree with the above. It doesn't hit the right chords, IMHO. One could hear those messages and understand where they were coming from without "buying into" them. One could be there--especially as successful biracial man--in order to help to attempt to bridge to divide between the races. That calls for understanding both sides of that divide, not just one.

Williams is ascribing some mean motives to Obama the young man that I don't see that he had. There were plenty of ways for him, especially with his education and background, to "get ahead" in politics without joining Trinity.

Were Obama to make a speech such as suggested

Another speech? Will that make all the critics happy?

Don't think so. Then we'll hear a chorus of "there he is making another speech - enough already!"

I was hoping the GE campaign will be about issues - looks like we maybe in for Rev Wright Part Deux

Righteous anger is one thing but hatred that shuns all attempts at reconciliation is whole different ballgame. I have asked the question before as to why Obama the great unifier wasn't able to change Rev Wright?

Some folks will declare themselves to be so hate-filled to reject unity & peace. To think that the country can be united by bringing everybody together is naive. There will be those that want no part of it and will have to be left behind.
