Well if you have small units than you need a truly massive number of units. They apparently are not talking about generating power for some individual houses but generating power for nations, so your talking about something like the low terrawatt range for the US, and I guess hundreds of gigawatts for Africa.

Now aiming for some percentage of that from solar isn't unrealistic, but "Power Entire Continent" probably is.

They already have them, called CSP (concentrated solar power). Pretty efficient and getting more so. That together with thin film solar will be very important in the future.
