"One's ultimate individual responsibility is often to others, but to be effective, you have to save yourself first. You figure it out? "

The way I have it figured out is this. Human conscious can be separated from human material. My conscience is responsible for considering the well being of myself and other creatures, which I've found need not viewed as contradictory.

Absent a life view founded upon principles of decency, no action is logically preferable to any other, except that which brings material benefit, which as history reveals may come with some negative side effects. In lieu of that, one may certainly map out a life time of endeavor. Generally people lean toward some sort of self love which includes the denial of any higher good than to seek comfort in the satiation of one craving or another...but another option presents itself. A life based on principles of decency suggests activity along a different path, one paved with respect, willingness to care for the well being of self and others, and humility with regard to higher goodness.
