They are doing it now. They position a coupon dispenser with a brightly flashing LED at the products they want to push. Read "The Space Merchants". It was written in the 1950s. Yet it predicted the Soviet Union folding because they wanted consumer goods. Which proved to be the case. It was a genuinely prophetic book. Ok, it was also steeped deeply in cynicism. But that only added, not detracted, from its accuracy.
