I think it very unlikely that any real application accesses ~6MB of data over and over *in a random-enough fashion* and *frequently enough* (relative to other work) to advantage a 6MB L2 over a 256KB much-faster L2 (together with much slower L3) to the extent that Nehalem's large number of other improvements (both in the core, and in main-memory latency/bandwidth) over Penryn can't make up for it during "the rest" of the application.

Even a single-threaded app.

This is probably why mas has not made any such specific claim as of yet.
