I read the book ages ago too, and I'm with you. Another similar story is "Alone in the Wilderness" that has been replaying on PBS for the last few yrs. Interesting life that Dick Proenneke led, but imo there was nothing idyllic or romantic about it.

There is no doubt in my mind that both of these guys were misanthropic misfits. I have about as much interest in them as they do in me. ;)

Here's my review of the same movie. You can skip to my last line, where I say: "I couldn't wait for the movie to be over."

In a sort of macabre way, I was amused that the grizzly who came upon the bony starving young man turned up his nose at the possible meal.
