Don't know. Many possibilities.

It appeared that the Sukhoi pilot was finishing a loop and, either misjudged the nearness of the runway, misread his instruments, had power problems, or any of a host of other reasons.

My guess is pilot error.

If I recall correctly, the Air Force Thunderbirds had an accident in Idaho some years back which partially resembled this one.

In both accidents, there was probably a whole lot of Whiskey - Tango - Foxtrot going on before the loud handle was pulled.

Sad to see this kind of thing happen.
