Ms. Palin looks like a wonderful candidate....but does Alaska hold enough of what McCain needs to win?

I think it's important for McCain to pick his VP before Obama does.

If he waits, and Obama happens to pick Kansas governor Kathleen Sebelius, there's no way he could then pick Palin. It would be ripped by the media as me-too-ism and pandering to the woman's vote. Of course, he could still go for Portman or Pawlenty.

If he picks Palin first, I think he has a shot at picking up some of Hillary's supporters. 1 or 2% could make the difference in a few key states.
