Income tax is the only progressive tax. The vast majority of taxes are regressive.

The discussion started with the bush tax cuts, and the real problem of course is that tax cuts without accompanying spending cuts rely on the pie in the sky notion that the tax cuts will spur the economy sufficiently as to increase revenues such that debt is managed or reduced. Only problem is that lack of focus on spending means that whatever comes in gets spent and then some.
So, alluring as that may be to voters, it's never worked...and 7 years of bush tax cuts, the economy is worsening, the deficit is not abating and the national debt is twofold what is was in 2000...complements of the bush administration.
