But it was kind of beside the point since Kerry, himself, repudiated his military service.

That's what he really was open to criticism about -- that he served was great, but when he came back he not only repudiated his own service, but bashed those who continued to serve. That, IMO, was fair game for very harsh attacks. Personally, I think those activities were sufficient to veto his being elected.
