Mirror neurons help us understand and mimic others. I don't know of anyone but you that think they're the source of self-awareness.

Awareness has broader connotations. We are aware of things observed by senses, abstractions, things hidden from the senses, forms of existence by inference, beyond focused consciousness we have awareness of things which are incidental and we have subconscious awareness; more thoroughly understood as existential phenomenon than as biochemistry.
