The first time I was creeped out by religion was at a tent revival meeting in Austin, Texas. It was free, and near where I lived, so I walked over on a lark.

Inside, it was like a freakshow. People suddenly being "seized by the spirit" and "babbling in tounges", while rolling on the floor with apparently no control of their bodies. The ministers (there were three) were "casting out the demons of the sick", which seemed to sometimes work and sometimes not, apparently depending on the strength of the demon and the strength of the faith of the minister and the sick person. All this was happening with a gospel choir backed by the crowd as the mood music.

Everyone in the place looked completely insane to me.
