Didn't we have a op-ed a few days ago that Europe also would vote for Obama? Soon, we will have China, Japan, India and Australia also prefer Obama over McCain. I sure do hope Friedman will keep telling the truth then.

Europe shows love for Barack Obama - unfortunately it has no vote

If Barack Obama was taking on John McCain in a global election he would already be on his way to the White House.

BP;

Do you feel that the truth about Arab Muslims favoring Obama for president would be dangerous to his candidacy if it becomes widely known?

Should be so obvious that he would be favored. McCain wants to stay there fighting and Obama wants us to come home and mind our own business. But of course the scare mongers will hype the issue and the question you ask is a good one. I think people are really tired of the "terrorist" issue but perhaps McCain can whip it up for one more run? We have so many issues here at home I wouldn't bet on it bringing a bunch of support to McCain though - might even back fire if he ignores the home grown economy....

I don't know. It could cut both ways, depending on the mood of the electorate. I suspect that the fact that Kerry was favored in foreign countries hurt him, although he had so many flaws as a candidate that I don't think it was in any way a deciding factor.

Still, I don't look forward to hearing or seeing the commercials that are bound to come. We got a taste of it when McCain starting floating the line that "Hamas [hear "terrorists"] supports Obama." It will only get worse and more vulgar. McCain has at least some restraint. The 527s won't have any.

We'll have to see. I can't see how it would actually help him. The only people for whom it will be a positive will either vote for him or won't vote at all.

BP -

First, there's absolutely zero chance of that not becoming widely known.

My own feeling is that it's not a bad thing for average Arab Muslims to be in favor of Obama. In fact, it's quite a good thing. I note that a Hamas leader, on the other hand, has said that the group absolutely does not favor Obama, after his speech to AIPAC last week.

There are undoubtedly people who consider all Arab Muslims to be enemies, and that anyone who is liked by them has to be evil. Such people are never going to vote for Obama in any case.

Thus, I don't think it's dangerous to his campaign.

Not really - but I think the republicans will try to showcase that.

If McCain's strongest argument is that he is the candidate who's not favored by Muslims and therefore should be elected - methinks that approach is a nonstarter. It's already been used to sell an unpopular war and is not going to fly with moderates and independents especially when the majority of the world's non-muslims are leaning that way too.

However, it might make the far right froth more at the mouth, but I don't think Obama is counting on those votes.
