There's a reason spending on alternative research fell after 1980. Oil and natural gas prices plummeted, so the economic incentive evaporated.

today it's less than half that amount. "Today" there was Feb. 2006. Alternative energy research is almost certainly much higher today. And the reason is prices are now up. So now the economic incentive is much higher.
