Rambi;

why is the drilling 50 miles off so objectionable. It seems as if the shoreline would be protected. Is it fear of spills?

The China drilling has to do with Canada not us. We drill close to our shores in some places - in some places we do not. I don't want oil drilling off our coast as any spill here could ruin the salmon runs and the prevailing winds would bring everything on shore. I think my state would go to war with the federal government should they try to drill here.

I don't think it being considered so objectionable is very reasonable.
