The salmon off the west coast will not come back - at least in my lifetime.

My buddy who lives on the Oregon Coast might take issue with you on that. He's a big salmon fisherman. The sealions waiting at the mouths of rivers might argue about it too.

I have seen driftnet fishing compared to clearcutting, an analogy which is utterly false. Driftnet fishing has no regeneration objective. It is somewhat comparable to mining, but not to clearcutting.

Clearcutting is a REGENERATION METHOD. That is, it is the first step in replacing an old decrepit forest with a new, fast-growing one. This process usually takes about three years between harvest and replanting. In Alaska, reseeding occurs naturally so planting is not needed.

Old decrepit forests have their place, but their cycles are just longer than active forest management. They still die and fall apart, thus changing the ecosystem.
