They haven't stayed quiet. They made a statement. If that statement turns out to have been materially false, they are liable to have serious legal problems. They know that, so the chances are that the situation is just what they said it was.

And good for them for not participating in this game.

Hi Allen,

Please read my posting one more time. You'll see that I made reference to Apple's statement. As far as going to jail, what's new? Heck, if one looks back over the past several years you'll find many corporate and Wall Street executives who have lied and cheated. Many have gone to prison.

The statement would normally be enough, but the problem for Apple is that they lost credibility by their silence during Jobs's cancer scare.

Put Jobs on CNBC for a 2 minute interview where he laughs off the rumors and talks about the cold he came down with last week and his weight loss due to his all tofu diet and the story is over. Anybody pushing the rumor gets burned beyond belief and is unlikely to spread anything along these lines in the near future.
