I find it hard to see how computer would/could become sentient, OTOH I find it really hard to see it as something that can never happen. Forget about all the "its 20 years away talk", that we have had for well over 20 years. What about a billion years from now...

I'm not arguing it will take that long, but rather that we can have development for that long, and that by then we can have technologies that would look like magic even to the most sophisticated man today (or the most sophisticated a millions years from now for that matter). I think artificial intelligence/sentience would probably be trivial for such a society.
