The trick is to quietly shift position without ever admitting you were wrong

They never admitted, did they, that Reagan's "Evil Empire" stance and "Star Wars" helped discombobulate the Soviets? The wisdom of the day was to avoid angering the big Russian Bear. Reagan was pronounced to be a dangerous mad cowboy - and reckless. When Gorbachev blinked and started "perestroika" - and then the Soviets fell apart - no one on the left felt any need to reassess their views and give Reagan some credit.

The public will have a chance to speak up in November. We'll see what happens. Hopefully, they'll teach another lesson to the quasi literati.

"the surge worked, but at too high a cost "

i thought the surge was an operation unrelated to five years of incompetence.. would the cost have been less without the surge?
