Of course it would be great if iPhones were more clear than most landlines, but in general, the average landline is still better than most cell phones.

I've found that Skype has by far the best clarity for voice. In fact I prefer it if I have to set-up a conference call. I expect it's because the voice channel isn't much different than good quality music streaming over IP. The quality stays high throughout the world, or at least China-US, Mexico-US, and Germany-US (my sons have been traveling :-). And you get reasonable video along with it (computer to computer - which is free).

I imagine VoIP among cell phone computers at high quality is lurking around the corner. If I recall correctly, the cell phone connection to land lines is IP already, except in low bandwidth packets.
