Chancels, you are not wrong about MTBE and the oxygenate aditive approach. There is no air quality benefit using MTBE in contemporary vehicles. The provision for a 2% oxygenate in gasoline included in the Clean Air Act Reauthorization in 1990 was the result of heavy lobbying by the MTBE and ethanol manufacturers. In that case the MBTE folks won out but eventually the major impacts to ground water and drinking water quality required its phase out.

Now it's ethanol's turn and not only is there no air quality benefit but there is a net dis-benefit. Nor is there a greenhouse gas benefit or an net energy benefit (if made from corn). In short, as you note, ethanol is a scam, once again perpetuated by special interests. The only possible justification is the reduction in foreign oil dependence but that has come at the price of driving corn prices to record highs with major impacts on food prices around the world.

I don't have to tell the people on this board just how off-the-charts screwed up our national energy "policies" are.
Best,
Oilgeezer

MTBE replaced tetra-ethyl lead. It retards gasoline ignition, aka raises octane levels.

MTBE runoff dissolved in water and contaminates the water table, is not biodegradable within any reasonable period of time, tastes bitter and is carcinogenic.

Ethanol at a level of 5.6% functions like MTBE, or tetra-ethyl lead. Ethanol costs 1/2 cent more per gallon than MTBE. This costs the average motorist an extra $5 per year.

Like MTBE, ethanol runoff contaminates water tables but is broken down by bacterial action within days or weeks, it's not carcinogenic, and is not bitter in the interim.

Ethanol also acts as a an oxygenate which lowers some types of emissions, at the expense of raising others.

All in all using ethanol as and octane additive is superior to MTBE, or lead.

People who consider themselves ethanol proponents are usually talking about much larger percentages than 5.6%. This excites them because it lines their pocket. Enough said.

Removing MTBE is envirothing. Sabotage of the US economy I call it.

Instead of enforce better handling and storage. No! Lets get rid of it.

Not that we are complaining if we can cash in on this one...

Chancels,

"I don't think that the refiners liked fooling around with MTBE."

The refiners never wanted to use MTBE but were forced to by the EPA. Then when the decision went bad, they were sued for using it.

When the public hates your inudstry, its easy to pass off shit like that.
