Great lakes. Steam boats. Lots of European shirtless. Iron ore and coking coal. Cheap oil. Robber Barons. Those were the components that created the USA.

Forget Tom Peters and Michael Porter.

Plastics need oil. Aluminum needs energy. Iron needs ore and coal.

We make door and window frames out of aluminum. PVC window frames are more expensive than aluminum here. In Europe PVC window frames are cheaper than aluminum.

Wood and Iron are very little used nowadays. Materials Tj. Materials. And keep in mind this is not cyclical. This is structural.

Keep also in mind newest technologies: Solar fuel cells. that uses high cost (Tantalum, Platinum and other rare metals). They will never become mass market. Niche players at the most.

Keep also in mind geography when you think trade.
