The people who get killed are the self-employed, who pay both shares (employee/employer) at a rate of 15.3% (including Medicare). It applies to the first $1,000 of net income.

If this went into private accounts, ordinary people could build up sizeable retirement accounts - accounts that could be passed on to heirs. The return on "contributions" to SS for the average person is lousy. Public employees have a system like this - so do many corporate employers.
