Since I went, on my own, and had a heart scan last year that showed, contrary to my lipid panel, that I had some arterial plaque, I have been reading deeply on heart disease.

My first guess, which will probably never be confirmed one way or the other, is that He had never been checked for heart disease. It's so easy these days to find the kind of problem that Russert probably had, and treat it.
