The loss of his only child at 58? You're probably right. I think it was Andrea Mitchell who said, "Our hearts are broken." His dad and other family members undoubtedly feel the same.

Here's a bit more on Russert's medical history from Wikipedia. I don't know where they learned that he had diabetes, though.

An autopsy, performed on the day of his death, determined that his history of diabetes mellitus and coronary artery disease led to sudden cardiac death. The immediate cause of death was an occlusive coronary thrombus.[24][1] On the special reports program, Russert's friend Dr. Michael Newman stated that the autopsy showed coronary artery disease in the left anterior descending artery, and a fresh blood clot was visible on one of these plaques.
