most people will not take kindly to McCain bashing when it comes to his military service.

No need to bash.
It's enough to point out what a limited service it was.

McCain was captured and his military career ended while he was a Lieutenant Commander. That's a long way from general officer. While that may sound impressive, it is just a couple of promotions out of school for a Navy guy and it took McCain until he was 30 to achieve that much.

If McCain had been a regular ship-navy officer he might have managed a work gang or two by the time he got to that rank. Since he was a pilot he got his promotions for learning how to fly various types of planes. He never managed anyone.

McCain has no experience in management from his Navy career. He has never been more than an "individual contributor". His promotions may show competence, but they don't show anything about leadership. He would have to actually be in charge of somthing besides his own ejection seat to have leadership experience.
