Couldn't find any single tomatoes in the store this morning. All they had were the "on the vine" type. They were getting nearly $3.50 for a vine with four tomatoes on it. I don't need but one, so I passed. Is this the case across the nation?

Yes, that sounds like the one my friend use to make, but why is the cabbage chopped, and I do go along with you about the stewed tomatoes.
