because Kerry was critical of the war, your side decided that that negated his brave service

Not just because he was critical of the war. Because he was critical of his fellow soldiers who were just doing the best they could to fight under difficult circumstances. Because the way in which he protested the war was essentially the same as Hanoi Jane -- giving aid and comfort to the enemy.
