True. There is a lot of nonsense being preached out there. Statins are very good at reducing LDL, but they don't seem to affect HDL or Triglycerides. So using other methods to increase HDL and lower Triglycerides are certainly worth while trying. But there are plenty of studies validating the effect of Fish Oil on heart attacks. And a recent study showed that getting your vitamin "D-3" over a 70 count results in a reduction in arterial plaque. And it's effects on other illnesses is also getting very well known. Niacin has always been a mainstay in heart treatment that got dropped when Statins came along, and L-Arginine has a lot of positive support. Diet is certainly the main thing, if you can get the person to lose weight permanently. I haven't been able to do it. Most people need to be told they are not fat. They are Obese. And in most cases, they are clinically or morbidly obese! I haven't found Davis to be off mainstream as much as being willing to look at supplements and diet a lot more than the typical Cardiologist. And believing in the value of using an EBT scanner to check arterial plaque. My lipid panel indicated I had no heart disease but my heart scan showed I had plaque, in the amount of 330 count. That count may be off by 10% or so, but it is still a damn good indicator of future trouble. In my case, being in there for a heart scan got me to pay for a body scan and find a kidney tumor that was cancerous. I had no symptoms and could have had very serious problems from it five years from now if I had not found it. The Urologists and Cardiologists at my Kaiser HMO not only don't believe in using an EBT scanner, they bad mouth it. Why? Because their GE Scanner salesman indoctrinates them to believe it's no good. Why? Because it's a two million dollar scanner that costs about $200 a scan. Neither GE, which bought it up and combined it with a more expensive scanner, or the GE salesman, makes any money from it. The "Fee for Service" Doctors and Hospitals don't make any money from either. There is a school of thought in the medical business that believes doing a lot of cheap scans will find a lot more problems and is the way to go. But there is no push behind that POV because it's not profitable. And for any Socialists reading this, it's the same, only worse, in "non-profit."
