For myself, I know I'm not a particularly effective leader, but I know one when I see one. It does not take brains so much as self confidence. Leadership can be taught, so they say, but there's a large component of natural ability. I hate it when organizations are governed from afar by people who know nothing of local conditions and local personalities. In my day, the best leaders led by walking around. Often in the morning they would sit on your desk with a cup of coffee and chat. They knew what was going on.
