This is just for one state, but for VA the violent crime index was about the same in 2006 than it was 40 years ago, (but higher than it was 41 or more years ago), and much lower than it was 30 years ago.

part of that is that as you get old, your vision and hearing is not as good. This makes you more jumpy, and also a better target so you might actually be in more danger than you were 40 years ago when a mugger was lucky to get nickle if he went after you.
