MTBE was originally discovered accidentally by the Italian firm ENI in the 1960s. The patent was bought by Lyondell / Exxon and promoted as a replacement for tetra ethyl lead.

Hartley's firm, Unocal, like the Europeans relied heavily on the addition of aromatics to raise octane - although they did use some MTBE like other US refiners.

In some cars MTBE lowered gas mileage by as much as 0.25 miles per gallon. This would be a 15% reduction in gas mileage if your car gets 1.7 miles per gallon initially, so you must be recalling this wrong.
