I suspect they do. But, like with tobacco executives, owning up to reality means they threaten their bonuses.

So they tell the inodes what they want to hear.

Maybe, regardless they have very little incentive to try to solve the problem by drilling. They will jut lower their profits as a transition occurs that will kill their business anyway. Unless they decide to do it out of patriotism or humanitarianism (LOL).
