Actually, there are relatively few places in the US you can grow Sugar Cane.

However, Sugar Beets were a popular crop in my home state, and their sucrose content is comparable to Cane.. In fact, the majority of sugar grown in the US comes from Beets.

But I still think it's truly a mistake to mix energy and food commodities. And agricultural solutions will still require substantial quantities of fertilizer and fuels for harvest. All to produce a bio-fuel that can't be transported in our national petroleum distribution pipelines.
