With respect the article said quite a bit more than your short synopsis.

Wonder how McCain would react to this one particularly in the face of Obama's repeated claims that the war in Iraq is not a war on terrorism.

Taliban seize Afghan villages
Published: June 17, 2008 at 7:19 AM

Afghanistan troops are reportedly planning an operation to retake several Kandahar province villages that have been seized by Taliban militants.

A spokesman with the NATO-led International Security Assistance Force said the operation will be mostly by Afghan police and military, CNN reported Tuesday.

An Afghan Defense Ministry spokesman was quoted as saying the campaign will involve thousands of Afghan troops.

The CNN report said NATO planes dropped leaflets warning residents of the villages in southern Afghanistan to leave before the operation begins.

However, one tribal elder told CNN the militants, anticipating the military attack, planted mines and destroyed bridges to force the villagers to fight with them.

The villages targeted are in the Arghandab district of Kandahar. It was in Kandahar from where about 400 Taliban militants escaped in a prison break last week.

The villages were captured last weekend by about 400 to 500 militants, the report said. Up to 13 villages may have been captured by the militants.

A BBC report said it wasn't known if the militants involved included those freed in the prison break.
