Interesting to read all the models predicting birthrates have failed.

Even though I posted that article because it was the lead story last month in REASON MAGAZINE, I didn't buy all of his examples. I am not in the mood to break it down.

One of the examples everybody uses is that the birthrate in France has stayed high. But this is a "spin," because the high birth rate is due to the Muslim immigrants. Pull them out and the ethic French have a low birth rate.

We get the same misleading stats on all sorts of things, especially health and crime rates, because we lump all of our groups together. Pull out our Caucasians from Blacks and Latins, and their stats match up with Canada and Europe.

Interesting points about children-friendly attitudes in the US.

Walmart? It's wonderful. One stop shopping, with most basics available, and at a reasonable price. It is true that such large stores damage downtown areas, especially in small towns. That is very regrettable - but frankly, it never stopped me from shopping there. Price and convenience win. Downtowns will have to discover ways of their own how to attract the public. More liberal regulations for outdoor caffees may help, for starters.
