The North Vietnamese military chief met with Robert McNamara decades after the tragic wasteful war and they both realized it was all a terrible misunderstanding. Because they never talked at the time the war began they didn't realize the VC were not allied with Russia or China, and were just defending their homeland, and so the entire war was based on a huge ignorant stupid wasteful tragic mistake. John Kerry was 100% right about the war in 1971. It HAD to end. Everyone killed in Vietnam was a wasted life. The whole effort was completely pointless and had almost nothing to do with US national security. The war debts also crushed our economy for more than a decade after. That's the crushed economy Carter inherited. GW Bush will leave one that's even worse.
