Irish Elec Board Upgrades Prices For Small Cos, Households By 17.5%

DUBLIN -(Dow Jones)- Ireland's Electricity Supply Board will raise prices by 17.5% from Aug. 1 for small businesses and households, the Commission for Energy Regulation said Friday.

The draft increase reflects the volatile energy market and high global oil prices. A decision will be be made November in on whether to introduce a further increase in January, the regulator said in a statement.

The Small Firms Association criticized the price hike and the fact that it was only given three weeks' notice: "Competitiveness is critical to the survival of all Irish companies and energy price is a key input indicator," it said.
