I'm not so sure that would have been true if they were sitting in office these days. In the culture of those days, it was very rare to hear criticism of authority figures. Except in close social circles and families, adults were not referred to by their first names, even by other adults...etc

JFK was loved abroad and accepted at home. But people really did not know much in those days,i.e., the pre-Internet era. Based on what I know now he was not as good as I thought. No doubt, his assassination did add to the aura which surrounded US presidents then.
