Secondly, teaching is one of the most exhausting professions there is. I would not have said that three short months ago. However, my student teaching has been a major wake up call.

I cannot speak for high school teachers, but I've taught numerous college courses and as long as you know your shit when you walk in the door, I can say that it is nothing compared with real work.

When you get in front of a class and pontificate as I am sure you do, it is relatively easy.

However, when you teach the way current teachers are encouraged to teach, its a lot harder. You don't spend the whole hour lecturing. Instead, you do a segment of the lesson and then circulate as the kids work. The point of this approach is three fold: to encourage critical thinking by talking to the kids as they do the lesson; to clear up any confusion for students who didn't understand the instructions; and most importantly, to work with the slow learners to insure they are getting the lesson period. The last part is the most difficult work......you never know what will register with a slow learner so you have keep doing trial and error until you break through. It requires alot of spontaneous creativity.

Given this approach, there is never a time when you can coast........your brain is always turned on and functioning. I have a German friend who facilitates business focus groups and he experiences the same kind of exhaustion at the end of the day. I started losing weight....that's how much my brain was taxing my body's energy.
