the kids today couldn't find Alaska on a globe, let alone where ANWR is , or how small the development site is.

Well, those graphics were done by the USGS. They seem to be of the opinion that 120 or so miles of pipeline is needed. Given that they probably know the soil conditions and the terrain, they probably have a good idea of how much pipe is needed.
