It would be rather interesting if Iraqi decisions end up deciding one of the more contentious issues in our upcoming election. LOL!

If the Iraqis tell the USA to take a hike, who benefits: Obama or McCain?

Given Iraq's history, that they would perceive this as just another occupation or puppet government shouldn't be at all surprising.
Our behavior hasn't been consistent in the past. It's no wonder they find us hard to trust.

There are fundamentally different views on the role of the US there in the long-term, which boil down to, is this a sovereign country or a US-controlled and -occupied fiefdom?

Those are of course fundamentally different views, but just about no one is arguing for the later.
