Well, Tarado, you have to think like a politician. I think it is worth opening up all of Federal lands to drilling, because it takes away the one last reason the Reps have been using for not doing anything about alternatives. Also, this has caused partisan bickering for years. So if you take a more inclusive approach and say, look, we can't get to energy independence with a silver bullet. It's going to take a basket of tactics. One of those tactics will be opening up Federal lands and drilling offshore. But we have to try other things too like solar, wind, wave, nuclear, electric cars, etc. Then you have a chance to redefine the argument and bring 50% or more of the Republicans with you on this journey. We all need to think like Obama. How do you bring everyone with you behind this great cause of becoming energy independent?

I understand that there are large areas off shore already under lease to many different oil companies and that at least 80% of the potentially available areas of the US continental shelf are open for leasing and exploration; maybe , thus , there are many other reasons why this has not been exploited ; cost being the major reason; why should the oil companies spend tens of billions for unsure reserves when they can spend similar amounts for vastly more reserves overseas? the GOP is developing another false issue.
