if having such a line is unavoidable, why not just leave it more or less where it is today, with "reasonable" modifications?

We are set up to make changes gradually. The last major Government change that comes to mind is when Jimmy Carter, of all people, abolished the Civil Aeronautics Board (CAB). We are wasting Billions and ruining lives with our present drug policy, and it will not change in my lifetime, IMO.

Athenians executed great Socrates for "messing" with young people's minds and dissing the Gods.

That's the trumped up charge he was brought to trial on but it wasn't really why he was there.

A student of Socrates went to the Oracle at Delphi and posed the question, "who is the wisest man in the world"? To this the Oracle responded, "Socrates". The student went back to Socrates to relay what the Oracle had told him. Socrates couldn't believe what the Oracle said, yet also knew that the Oracle doesn't lie so.... Socrates sought out the richest, smartest and most powerful people of his time and began questioning each about his life etc, trying to prove that one was wiser than he.... Each time what he ended up doing was pissing off every one of those rich powerful people while coming to the conclusion that the Oracle was right since Socrates was the only one who openly admitted that he knew nothing..... The oligarchy that was ruling Athens at the time just happen to consist of many of the very same people that Socrates had just humiliated... You know the rest.
