Why attack SUV owners, it's not the MPG but how much you drive. Ration gas then, I'll still drive an SUV, I want to be comfortable and safe. You won't get me into one of those tin coffins

John,

I think we see the scope and depth of the problem differently. If you felt the urgency that I feel, and expected what I expect in the very near future, then I think you would be repulsed by the pure waste of huge SUVs.

Some would be repulsed by pure waste of huge suburban houses.

I sincerely believe that our way of life is threatened. Rich, poor, everyone. More serious than 9/11, more serious than WWII, maybe more serious and longer lasting than the Great Depression. Am I an alarmist? Maybe. Not worth the gamble

If you feel so strongly, dump you suburban house, dump you car and move to some urban condo apartment. But I suspect you want the other guy to bear the brunt of your "progressive" ideas.

Looking at it from my perspective, pissing off a few SUV drivers is not at all significant.

Looking at it from my perspective, mothballing your house and pissing you off is not at all significant...

Joe

Yeah, you're probably right. I am not an alarmist on this.

What I don't understand is why they won't consider conservation? That is the fastest way to get oil prices back down. And from what I have seen here on the West Coast, people can be very responsive when asked to conserve voluntarily. In fact, they feel they are united in a common cause.

Harry Reid - owner of two Suburbans. No wonder he looks so bad. That heavy gasoline use must be making him sick.

In case you can’t read the caption under the photo, let me reprint it:

“Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid walks from his Chevrolet Suburban (left) to attend a news conference on energy efficiency Wednesday in Upper Senate Park. Reid rode in the sport utility vehicle from the Capitol to the event, which was across the street.”

The Chevy Suburban SUV weighs in at 5800 pounds and gets 15 mpg. Reid’s got two of them–one in DC and one back in Nevada.

Speaking of being "repulsed by the pure waste of huge SUVs."
